Edgar Wright just posted this status update on facebook that says

Edgar Wright
read an indepth analysis on a fansite about his fluctuating weight. It was both hilarious and depressing. Note to self: Google alerts. Bad.

he then goes on to post the link to the "fansite" in the comments and it's from this post community.livejournal.com/ohnotheydidnt/37180875.html

"Gusterrhoids.

It's been ten years since we released Lost & Gone Forever, the album that put us on peoples' radars, helped us graduate from our van to a bus, and taught me to fill my finger cuts with krazy glue.

To celebrate, we're turning the clock back to 1999 and announcing the Lost & Gone Forever Ten Year Anniversary Tour -- 9 very special evenings with Guster. No opener. Two sets, one of which will be the album in its entirety. Yes, even Two Points for Honesty and Rainy Day. I haven't decided if we should play the album in order or in shuffle mode. Any thoughts?

Some facts about the album, mangled together in one chunky paragraph with no flow:

* Produced by Steve Lillywhite, who was our #1, I Can't Believe He Said Yes, dream producer choice. We played Woodstock '99 right before the album came out, well before we were ready to play a show that big, and mere hours before people set the place on fire. The Barenaked Ladies liked the album and brought us on tour with them, thus doubling the size and Canadian-ness of our following. Karl Denson played sax on Fa Fa, one take, that was it. There were no drum sticks used on the album, only hand drums, and I said so in the liner notes -- Ryan would later make fun of me for including this detail in the album package. We recently found another band's album with the same cover photo of the boy throwing the big rock on the piano (first person to reply with the name of the photographer who took that photo gets two free tickets to the Rochester show). Paige from Phish played theremin on All the Way Up to Heaven. We almost didn't put Happier on the record. What You Wish For and Rainy Day were featured in the movie "Life as a House," which is about cancer. When we toured with Ben Folds in the summer of 2004 he made All the Way Up to Heaven sound so good with his piano chops we never played the song again after that.

Tour dates, all lined up in a row:

10/28/09 - Charlotte, NC @ Neighborhood Theater...Tix / Facebook Event
10/29/09 - Washington, DC @ 9:30 Club / Tix / Facebook Event
10/30/09 - Washington, DC @ 9:30 Club / Tix / Facebook Event
10/31/09 - Boston, MA @ Orpheum Theater / Tix / Facebook Event
11/04/09 - Cincinnati, OH @ Madison Theatre / Tix / Facebook Event
11/05/09 - Cleveland, OH @ House of Blues / Tix / Facebook Event
11/06/09 - Rochester, NY @ Armory / Tix / Facebook Event
11/07/09 - Burlington, VT @ Higher Ground / Tix / Facebook Event
11/27/09 - New York, NY @ Beacon Theater / Tix / Facebook Event

Some facts about the above tour dates:

This will be the only real Guster headlining tour of 2009. There are no west coast dates, or Texas dates. The only shows near the midwest are two dates in Ohio. The only show in the south is in Charlotte NC. For those of you who find this tour appealing but live in places we're not visiting, we feel your pain. We are visiting some venues of historical significance -- Higher Ground in Vermont, though in a new location now, was where we launched the original Lost & Gone Forever tour. The Orpheum, in Boston, was where we put on an epic Halloween show ten years ago where we wore tuxes and pretended it was New Year's Eve, Y2K. The Beacon in New York, while a relatively new venue for us, harkens back to a time when we played Thanksgiving Weekend in NYC five years in a row. We encourage you all to get your tickets early as these shows will probably sell out... you can get tickets here, on sale Friday July 17th:

http://www.ticketmaster.com/Guster-tickets/artist/781894

http://www.livenation.com/artist/guster-tickets/

We will all have the same clothes, facial hair, and hair cuts we had ten years ago on this tour. Promise. Even Joe.

Remember that pseudo how-to for struggling artists [Trent] Reznor posted on NIN.com recently? As you could imagine, the whole thing caused quite a stir, prompting TopSpin’s Ian Rogers to post a response to the concerns of a few fans and Reznor to amend the original rant.

The interesting bit to me is that Reznor is warning artists to steer clear of Radiohead’s pay-what-you-want scheme. Sure, he has ranted about his fellow digital revolutionaries before, calling their offer “a bait and switch to get you to pay for a MySpace-quality stream,” but this time he is more specific about the danger of letting fans choose the value of your music. Here’s the full excerpt:

Pay-what-you-want model

This is where you offer tracks or albums for a user-determined price. I hate this concept, and here’s why. Some have argued that giving music away free devalues music. I disagree. Asking people what they think music is worth devalues music. Don’t believe me? Write and record something you really believe is great and release it to the public as a “pay-what-you-think-it’s-worth” model and then let’s talk. Read a BB entry from a “fan” rationalizing why your whole album is worth 50 cents because he only likes 5 songs on it. Trust me on this one - you will be disappointed, disheartened and find yourself resenting a faction of your audience. This is your art! This is your life! It has a value and you the artist are not putting that power in the hands of the audience - doing so creates a dangerous perception issue. If the FEE you are charging is zero, you are not empowering the fan to say this is only worth an insultingly low monetary value. Don’t be misled by Radiohead’s In Rainbows stunt. That works one time for one band once - and you are not Radiohead.

Source

I can't believe people are still bitching about this. When did In Rainbows get released? 2007? Mercy. And the Radiohead/In Rainbows-related bitching will probably continue for maybe, idk, another year or two...

This episode Paris claimed the internet was THE DEVIL. And that any picture of her shown without her undies were just the paps being pervs and using photoshop, to make her look like she wasn't wearing underwear. She bascially said everyone on the internet are sick pervs..how does that make you feel ontd? Also she said that Birttany used her, and that she's so nice and people just take advantage of her. hmmmmm, interesting.

Outcome was lame )

If you happen to be in the Los Angeles area this week, you can catch Outfest, one of the largest gay, lesbian and transBono’d film festivals in the country. In addition to a strong lineup of feature films and shorts offering a welcome, dildo-free alternative to the exploits of Brüno and friends, this year’s fest hosts the Strand Releasing 20th anniversary program, as well as a variety of panels — there’s still tickets available for God Only Knows: A Look at ‘Big Love’ and A Li’l Bit of ‘Glee,’ for any polygamist showtune-lovers among you. (Insert Seven Brides for One Brother joke here.)

At yesterday’s chat at the Directors Guild of America building — the galvanizingly titled Taking It to the Streets: LGBT Directors Get Political — a number of gay and gay-friendly directors discussed the logistics of being queer behind the camera. Among the panelists were Outrage director Kirby Dick (straight, but closeted-Republican-curious) and industry veteran Todd Holland, whose Emmy-winning career includes everything from Fred Savage 8-bit odyssey The Wizard to The Larry Sanders Show to Jon Hamm’s recent guest-starring turn on 30 Rock.

LA Weekly reports that Holland advised “young, gay male actors to ‘stay in the closet.’ … [He] explained that it’s a necessary career choice if a gay actor wants to succeed in Hollywood.”

Holland’s sentiments certainly don’t echo the “Out of the closets and into hair and makeup!” battle call espoused by a new generation of openly gay stars, but it does raise questions as to whether or not the advice might contain a kernel of pragmatic truth. For as long as there are straight actors willing to orally stimulate ghostly apparitions of Milli Vanilli to climax on the silver screen, out talent will continue to find even those prestige gay roles going directly to their hetero competition.

Hello linguaphiles,
Is there any natural human language that you know of, wherein the least significant digit of a number comes first in the reading order (IE: nineteen would be represented as 91)?
I am only familiar with Western European and East Asian numbering systems, but so far as I can tell, they all go big-to-small.

Thank you

I received a termination notice from my current roommate with no reason as to why (yes, seriously).  We had some business dealings that fell through, but I believe that should not be considerable cause for termination of a lease.
When inquired as to when she would be giving me my deposit, she has ignored my phone calls and texts (she is out of state). ARGH!
What to do?

Also, if anyone is looking to sublease their apt or looking for a roomie. Feel free to shoot me a msg. :) Budget is 1,000

Pitfalls of Fanfiction

Alright. Here we go.

I am sick to death of all the overdone token eating disorder fics that seem to leap out from behind every fandom lamp-post. I mean, I get it - eating disorders are srs business, you know this, you suffer from one or have a friend who suffers from one, so you want to show the world what horrors lie in wait for those who starve themselves, etc. I'm not personally a fan of the whole ED genre because I very seldom find it done well, but if you feel absolutely compelled to turn your favourite character into an obsessive calorie counter or b/p-er, please bear in mind:

1. It's not always about being thin. Not everybody who has an eating disorder looks in the mirror and sees a grotesquely fat individual staring back at them. For some people it's about control, an escape from an uncontrollable world through something that's solid and definite. For others, it's self-punishment. Denying yourself food is brutally destructive and painful. A lot of eating-disordered girls have been sexually assaulted, and it can become their defense mechanism - making themselves as skeletal and sexually unattractive as possible keeps them safe from further attack. Some people are hurting and just want their bodies to reflect how fragile they feel. It can be all of these reasons, or none. There are all kinds of motivations for eating-disordered behaviour. It doesn't have to be about looking like the cover-girl of a Vogue magazine.

Also, I would like to draw fandom's attention to the fact that said Vogue aesthetic is a cultural thing. 'Skinny' has only very recently become synonymous with 'attractive' in the eyes of pop culture. People far removed from this culture are unlikely to be convinced that weighing 45 kilos will make them beautiful. Hermione Granger probably isn't overly fussed about having a supermodel's body. Legolas probably doesn't look at his reflection in puddles and go 'oh man, I wish I looked more like Mary-Kate Olsen.' Lucy Pevensie isn't going to adopt 'bones are beautiful' as her motto for life.

2. Anorexia is not the only way. The 'perfect anorexic' doesn't really exist. Real anorexics don't live off air and water - their daily intake is insufficient and highly regimented, but they still eat. Also, they fluctuate. They fuck up, they decide to 'get better' and then relapse, and sometimes they'll eat a lot more or less than other times. Bulimic behaviour is even less predictable - they are usually (and I'm generalizing) much less regimented in pretty much everything. They're likely to be more openly out of control. Also, middle ground is possible. Not everyone has to be The Most Extreme Anorexic Evar. Ever heard of ED-NOS? Binge-Eating Disorder? There are plenty of ways to have messed-up attitudes to food without subsisting on two cornflakes a day.

3. Cuddles and tearful catharses do not fix eating disorders. The End.
